Description:
The 1960's gave birth to a number of TV series that involved elements of espionage and intrigue. Typically, the shows that were produced in the United States involved a substantial dose of fist fighting and gunplay. But Britain's answer to this trend was 'The Avengers', which dealt with the sometimes heavy subject matter in a stylish and polished manner. With a slight tongue-in-cheek approach to drama, the producers also added a bit of dry humor to their stories. The success of the show and its ultimate popularity outside the UK was largely due to the suave charm of Patrick Macnee and the sexy elegance of Diana Rigg. Rigg was the second female lead character on the show, after Honor Blackman departed in 1964. The chemistry between Macnee and Rigg elevated the show to the peak of its popularity. One of the final episodes of the Avengers with Diana Rigg as a cast member, was "Mission Highly Improbable" in which a shrinking ray is used by a villainous character to miniaturize a military vehicle that Steed is occupying. Mrs Peel's amusement at Mr Steed's predicament is evident.
