Description:

While Allison Hayes was an attractive woman, she was not the most memorable thing about this science fiction soap opera from the late 50's. The acting was typical of the "B" movie genre, and in fact, one could make a persuasive argument for the idea that this film remains the classic example of the grade B film category. And the effects were so horribly limited by the production budget that the director, Nathan Juran, changed his name in the credits to his alternate identity of "Nathan Hertz". This wasn't the first time he had done so, as it was Juran's common practice to use his middle name on productions that he was less than satisfied with. Indeed, there are two things from this film that survive to this day in the common lexicon of pop culture: the term '50 Foot Woman' and of course, Reynold Brown's seductive poster illustration. Certainly the poster can be given credit for reinforcing the memory of the film as a visual pop icon, but the phrase "Fifty Foot" has become so closely associated with "Woman" that it has come to represent not only the essential idea of a powerful woman, but also the default height dimension of anything that is freakishly out of proportion with the normal world. Think about it. How many times have you heard someone describe a creature or object as being "fifty feet tall" as part of their attempt to enhance their expression of amazement?
